Naturism and mindfulness

Posted on September 14, 2016

Mindfulness is all over the place these days. For anybody interested in self development, mindfulness is almost a must. As Wikipedia defines it: « Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment ».

Lots of naturist will say they are feeling better when naked, they feel more « connected » to their environment and to others, they feel more « themselves ». The same thing goes with people practicing yoga, meditation or other mindfulness techniques.

It is interesting to note that in the same Wikipedia article, « bare attention » is mentioned: Georges Dreyfus has expressed unease with the definition of mindfulness as « bare attention » or « nonelaborative, nonjudgmental, present-centered awareness ». Naturism is nonjudgmental as well.

With those definitions in mind, I was able to link the dots of mindfulness and naturism that appeared during my morning naked meditation. I have been practicing naked meditation, naked yoga and naked workouts for years now, and nothing feels better than practicing those activities naked. Because of the increased awareness of your body as it touches the floor, of the air that you feel on your bare skin, I truly believe nudity increases mindfulness and allows to feel better, more relaxed and better connected to the present moment.

What do you think? Share your experience of naturism and mindfulness in the comment section! Thank you!

  1. My first experience of Yoga was naked and I continued that way for several years. I now attend Yoga sessions at my local gym three times a week, but sadly these are not naked and I do find that clothing does detract from the full benefit. I have tried a variety of different clothes and nothing is definitely better!

    • Brian, you may want to propose to the yoga teacher to organize naked yoga sessions. There are many example of such sessions, and this may fill a demand that has not yet been made public. It could be setup after normal operating hours to avoid crowded times. Just thinking.

      • I have contemplated doing just that, as well as suggesting to the manager of the whole centre that they might like to make at least one hour per week 'clothes optional' in their spa, so people can have an authentic sauna experience… Which should I try for first? mmm…

  2. I don't think I have ever tried yoga, naked or otherwise. I have meditated in many different places, some naked some in minimum clothing possible. I don't think there was any significant difference in naked meditation & clothed, as far as the results were concerned.
I have however walked naked on many different types of surface provided by nature and most certainly felt much more 'connected' & blissfully at ease. From sands to forest glades, from shingled shores to craggy outcrops, all manner of magnificent magnetic vibes have calmed my troubled or unrested soul.
Yes I am mindful of naturism & nature!
