I do not think your thoughts are random. They are on target!
I grew up in Ohio, as a kid I read ever book I could find on "Indians" I wished I was an Indian. My dream was to find any knowledge of Indians or artifacts. Am I a racist by saying Indian. I think I am a Native American, but I would be proud to be an Indian, but the genes are not there.
